11 Major Airports in Northern Italy (With Map, Nearest Cities, and Transfers by Public Transport)

Here are the main international airports in Northern Italy.

They are perfect for flying into the largest northern Italian cities. For example, Milan, Venice, Bologna, Turin, Genoa, and Verona.

Birds'eye view of Venice from the top of St. Mark's Campanile - Venice, Italy - rossiwrites.com

These major airports in Northern Italy also give you quick access to many popular destinations here. Among them are Italy’s largest lake, Lago di Garda, Italy’s most famous lake, Lago di Como, the beautiful Cinque Terre, and the majestic mountain range of the Dolomites.

Some of these northern Italian airports are also a great point of arrival for important central Italian cities like Florence, Ancona, and even the Italian capital Rome.

Knowing your airport options is very helpful when you are planning a trip to or a holiday in Northern (or even Central) Italy. Distances here are short. High-speed and fast regional trains link cities, towns, and popular destinations at regular intervals throughout the day.

Let’s say that you want to travel to Venice. And so it happens that the flights for your dates to either Venice Airport or Treviso Airport are not convenient or are prohibitively expensive. No need to despair! Although not immediately obvious, there are three more airports that are within a very reasonable transfer time to Venice. These are Verona Airport, Trieste Airport, and Bologna Airport.

So, for example, if you find a cheap flight to Verona Airport, then you can be in Venice in under two hours. The shuttle bus from the airport to the train station takes 15 mins and then the high-speed train from Verona to Venice takes less than 1 h 15 mins. All in all, this is a very palatable transfer time!

The same applies if you fly into Bologna. The shuttle train from the airport to the train station takes only seven minutes. The high-speed train journey from Bologna to Venice lasts just over an hour and a half.

So, to help you plan your trip to Italy, in this blog post today you will find the 11 major airports in the northern part of the country. Scroll down to see them listed in alphabetical order. For each one of them, I have provided:

  • short description to give you an idea of the size and character of the different airports.
  • Transfer options by public transport from the respective airport to the nearest large northern Italian city.
  • Information about which other cities and tourist destinations you can easily reach from each airport.
  • Links to the official websites of these 11 main international airports in Northern Italy and their IATA codes.

Over the last 20 years, I have travelled by plane to Northern Italy dozens of times from different departure points around Europe. Especially, as I spent six of those years living in Vicenza – a small northern Italian city that is easy to reach from eight of the airports listed below.

This blog post is based on my personal experience of flying into and navigating the major northern Italian airports. I hope that you will find the information I have provided useful and that you will refer to it time and time again during the planning stages of your next trip to Italy.

Have a look!

The above map shows you the exact location of the 11 main international airports in Northern Italy.

You can click on the red pins and a popup will appear with the name of the respective airport and its address which you can then use for directions in Google Maps.

Here are the airports pinned to the map in the same order they are listed below:

1. Bergamo Airport 2. Bologna Airport 3. Genoa Airport 4. Milan Linate Airport 5. Milan Malpensa Airport 6. Rimini / San Marino Airport 7. Treviso Airport 8. Trieste Airport 9. Turin Airport 10. Verona Airport 11. Venice Airport

These airports are linked to the nearest main Italian city either by a shuttle bus, by train or both. I have provided specific details about transfers by public transport under each entry below. In most cases, you can buy tickets for the shuttle bus online in advance. If you want to book train tickets in advance (a good idea, especially, if you have a longer journey ahead of you once you touch down), have a look at these websites OmioItaloTreno, and TrenItalia.

Transfers by taxi and private car are also widely available. For contact details, have a look at the official websites of each airport (links are provided under each entry below) to see which local companies they recommend. Alternatively, you may want to see the private transfers available on GetYourGuide and Viator. To retrieve all options, just type the name of the airport you will be flying into and/or from in the search box and press Enter.

I like flying into Bologna Airport as fast motorways and convenient trains take you smoothly to such famous Italian cities as Milan, Verona, Venice, and Florence within a very reasonable travel time.
